Rapid deployabiilty of the division is assured by Fort Stewart's proximity to Hunter Army Airfield and to the Port of Savannah, which is capable of simultaneously loading all nine of the Navy's SL7 Fast Sealift ships. Hunter Army Airfield encompasses 5,372 acres and boasts the longest runway on the East Coast, handling both 747 and C17 Aircraft.
Combined, the two bases are home to more than 24,000 miltary personnel and generate an annual direct federal expenditure of almost $1.7 billion.
The strong presence of military in our area further increases the demand for retail, food service, real estate, and other sectors. In addition to the highly trained and disciplined military personnel, the bases are home to military dependents, many of whom fill important jobs in the private sector.
