Sports & Recreation - All Year!

If you're a fan of outdoor activities, you're gonna love our 15 major recreation centers with the largest facility comprising 500 acres packed with tennis courts, an archery range, ball fields, a 27-hole golf course, a soccer complex, weightlifting center, and softball complex.

Other rec centers provide jogging, bicycle and nature trails, fishing, swimming, sailing, and picnicking.

And you don’t ever have to stop playing thanks to our favorable year-round climate!

Golf

If your idea of serenity is a pristine green on a beautiful day, Savannah’s got your ticket.

Nearly 60 golf courses are located in the area with Hilton Head, "the golf island," only 45 miles away.

And for the spectators, Savannah hosts one of the most prestigious golf tournaments on the PGA Champions Tour – the Liberty Mutual Legends of Golf.

Hilton Head's Harbourtown hosts the annual Heritage tournament and the Celebrity Golf Tournament.

Water

The Savannah region is a boater's paradise with 420 miles of navigable waters dissecting 87,000 acres of tidal marshlands. Within a 50-mile radius there are 20 marinas with scores of companies offering kayaking, deep-sea charter fishing and dolphin tours, bird watching, and boat rentals. And, if your budget is looser, take your sailboat out to Wassaw Sound, where the 1996 Summer Olympic Games held their yachting events.

Spectator Sports

If you prefer your sports sitting down, you won’t be disappointed. There's football, basketball, baseball, and volleyball at area colleges, especially in nearby Statesboro, where the Georgia Southern University Eagles have won six national championships in Division I-AA football since 1985. The PGA hosts their Legends of Golf tournament here each spring.

The Sand Gnats, a Class A baseball team, captured the South Atlantic League championship three times during the 1990s. Grayson Stadium, built in 1941, is one of the gems of minor league parks in the south, and legendary athletes who have played at this ball field include Babe Ruth, Jackie Robinson, Mickey Mantle, Hank Aaron, and Shoeless Joe Jackson.

Other popular events include the St. Patrick’s Day Rugby Tournament, the Memorial Health Tybee Marathon, the American Powerboat Association World Kilo Speed Runs, the ENMARK Savannah River Bridge Run, Memorial Health Hockey Classic, Salt Water Shootout Fishing Tournament, and Memorial Health Diamond Classic.
