Georgia, led by trade with China, surpasses $100 billion for first time
WorldCity - Miami, FL,
April 2, 2009
Georgia’s trade with the world increased 7.86 percent in 2008, topping $100 billion for the first time ever, according to WorldCity analysis of the most recent annual U.S. Census data.
Georgia’s trade topped $60 billion for the first time in 2004, $70 billion for the first time in 2005, $80 billion for the first time in 2006 and $90 billion for the first time in 2007.
Georgia, led by the Port of Savannah and Atlanta’s Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport, is the nation’s No. 10-ranked Customs district. The Port of Brunswick is also an important port because of the large number of car imports and exports occurring there.
Georgia had 23 trade partners which exceeded $1 billion in total trade with the state, the same number as the previous year. Israel joined the Billion Dollar Club while Sweden fell out after five consecutive years.
China became the Customs district’s first trading partner to exceed $20 billion in two-way trade. The Asian manufacturing powerhouse first surpassed 10 percent of all of the state’s trade in 2001; in 2008, it surpassed 20 percent for the first time.
Overall, exports grew more rapidly than imports, and the state’s trade deficit fell from $26.72 billion to $24.48 billion. Exports increased more than 14 percent while imports increased a little more than 4 percent.
Georgia’s total trade for 2008 was $101.22 billion, with exports of $38.37 billion and imports of $62.85 billion.
